The Work of the Work is an exhibition in relation to the studios of 7 artists based in Los Angeles with Canadian connections. The work of producing artworks is explored literally, thinking about the studios and the processes of art making from a practical perspective. Not the existential, psychological question — but the material one, showing the incidental process of how artworks are manifested. The process, the way, the road, these are the focus for this exhibition.
In Jon Bernad‘s “studio visit paintings” he visits an artist’s studio and places something from there onto a canvas.
Krista Buecking shows a pencil crayon collage work rendering a scene from the the home shopping network.
Nicolas Grenier shows the studies for a painting, a series of small paintings, repeated over and over, showing the steps of the work to get to the final work.
Jen Hutton is presenting a text linked to a trip she did with the curator while discussing ideas for the show.
Steve Kado always builds the same smooth table to work on, wherever he travels, for his studio, like a ritual, so he will make and present the table itself, along with an inspirational word for this “workplace ad” that he made to keep himself motivated.
Ben Tong creates an ambient sound environment along with a sculpture made from a tofu sausage and a piece of redwood lumber – mood generators for an atmosphere for art making.
Alice Wang presents wall/floor prints and a series of drawings linked to her adventures in imagineering.
